Electromagnetic Band Gap Structures in Antenna Engineering AND Electronic Instrumentation

An Analog Electronics Companion

The first three parts of the book cover the maths and physics needed to understand circuit function, analysis and design. Part 4 examines some basic circuit components with reference to their physical and simulation properties. The final and largest part examines the design and function of a wide range of analog systems, using simulation to demonstrate the relationship between analysis and performance.

Electrical Properties Of Materials, Seventh Edition
We have added microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), integrated circuits growing in the third dimension, expanded considerably nanoelectronics heralding the advent of radically new devices still at the laboratory stage like nanotube transistors, single electron transistors, and organic transistors. We added quantum wires, quantum dots, and the quantum cascade laser to the section on semiconductor lasers, introduced a new set of magnetic devices, whose operation is based on electron spin, under the heading of spintronics, added a new ferroelectric random access memory to the dielectric chapter and described a very fast new memory in the superconductivity chapter. The basic technology was similar to thermionic valves, which came later and have long since almost vanished. So is it time for solid state electronics to take over with more efficient lighting, reduce greenhouse emissions and perhaps save the planet?

Electronic Instrumentation

The book is based on various series of courses on electronics and electronic instrumentation that were given by the author during the many years when he lectured at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. The courses were designed for students from various departments such as: Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering and Mining Engineering. When numbers of non-Dutchspeaking Master of Science students started to rise it became necessary to publish an English version of the book. One need only look around homes, offices and industrial plants to see that they feature almost everywhere. Indeed, it is practically impossible to name any appliances, tools or instruments that do not contain electronic components.

Electromagnetic Band Gap Structures in Antenna Engineering

The book is organized into seven chapters and one appendix. Chapter 1 introduces the background and basic properties of EBG structures. The EBG analysis methods and antenna applications are also summarized. The applications of EBG structures in antenna engineering are presented in Chapters 5, 6 and 7. In Chapter 5, the EBG structures are integrated into microstrip patch antenna designs. The surface wave band gap property of EBG helps to increase the antenna gain, minimize the back lobe, and reduce mutual coupling. Some applications of EBG patch antenna designs in high precision GPS receivers, wearable electronics, and phased array systems are highlighted at the end of the chapter.
